W. Norton and art directed by Debra Morton Hoyt. The final cover printed beautifully, thanks in large part to an amazingly detailed painting of Sor Juana from the 17th century (I love her eye staring down the viewer).<br />

As a book designer, you go through so many comps in a year, it's easy to forget what you sent in for the first round. <i>Sor Juana </i>was a title I worked on almost a year ago, but I was reminded of the other designs I turned in after receiving the printed book. Luckily, this project had a fairly quick approval process and we moved forward with just slight revisions on the cover above. Here are a few other typographically driven comps I was pleased with (though I fully understand why the final was chosen):<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLxTHi-37_ugpVQGuUNv0lriJq-9TVSg6MOfKcs1K5CgY-IGca4OGjXrhbLeVXBxmu9hT440ML3_pttKd9SiTaxFsSB1PxJarubPmJAkLGmF7qgs4GvYP3dLysIhyphenhyphenMc838jU3XBgatKso/s1600/Sor+Juana_comps-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLxTHi-37_ugpVQGuUNv0lriJq-9TVSg6MOfKcs1K5CgY-IGca4OGjXrhbLeVXBxmu9hT440ML3_pttKd9SiTaxFsSB1PxJarubPmJAkLGmF7qgs4GvYP3dLysIhyphenhyphenMc838jU3XBgatKso/s640/Sor+Juana_comps-1.jpg" width="425" /> </a></div>

<br />
The idea was to position this title in the trade market as much as possible, while setting it apart from other covers about the water crisis which incorporate water imagery.<br />
<br />
The first option I showed is a graphic approach. The water droplet is multiplied and creates an alarming visual:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyqWLgf7YnXdSHvWcvvLmKCNGm61Pysozk1NIfxmi2qTtyI4v0nPrR2UrQ3rn3YQizrj-NCr5wuasVWKWIwIfynuymrLmY-3_ZA3MC2Gvos07fU8JVkWcj2Aj5g7Jfouc9H4Q2so4vptI/s1600/piper_comps-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyqWLgf7YnXdSHvWcvvLmKCNGm61Pysozk1NIfxmi2qTtyI4v0nPrR2UrQ3rn3YQizrj-NCr5wuasVWKWIwIfynuymrLmY-3_ZA3MC2Gvos07fU8JVkWcj2Aj5g7Jfouc9H4Q2so4vptI/s1600/piper_comps-3.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The final cover is below. The image, by Amit Dave, is a haunting photo. My art
director, Rachel Moeller, described the photograph as succinctly
representing the "thirst" and "chaos" of the title. I didn't want the type to overwhelm the impact of the image, so it is clean and bold. The cover type is also incrementally scaled down as as visual metaphor for the diminishing water supply:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Last year, Graywolf Press assigned me Leslie Jamison's extraordinary book,<a href="https://www.graywolfpress.org/books/empathy-exams" target="_blank"> <i>The Empathy Exams</i></a>. The book has gone on to become a <i>New York Times</i> bestseller, no small feat for a work of essays. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Essays and short story collections can be difficult to design for. Typically, I try to hone in on one of the essays and tie the cover into the imagery and theme of that essay. <br /><br />The title essay is about the author’s time working as a medical actor, where she would act out symptoms for medical students to diagnose. I didn't necessarily want to portray the book in a sterile, cold way related to a hospital setting, rather I wanted to evoke the <i>feeling</i> of empathy. I used warm colors and paint to project the rawness of the writing.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;">A heart, the source of empathy, or at least what we use as a visual for love, was an initial starting point. As a nod to the medical part of the essay, a graphic illustration of a heart is used. </span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">We kept refining the one with the heart, trying multiple color treatments. These comps used hand-painted type (based on a font). I liked the slight indication of pain with the the spiked letters. It became clear the type was not working for Graywolf though, so I refined the lettering for legibility and brought back in the subtle color variations from the original painting. </span><br />

Here is an excerpt from the author's site:<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="color: #990000;">My memoir <i>Brain on Fire</i> chronicles the swift path of my illness
and the lucky, last-minute intervention led by one of the few doctors
capable of saving my life. As weeks ticked by and I moved inexplicably
from violence to catatonia, $1 million worth of blood tests and brain
scans revealed nothing. The exhausted doctors were ready to commit me to
the psychiatric ward, in effect condemning me to a lifetime of
institutions, or death, until Dr. Souhel Najjar—nicknamed Dr.
House—joined my team. He asked me to draw one simple sketch, which
became key to diagnosing me with a newly discovered autoimmune disease
in which my body was attacking my brain, an illness now thought to be
the cause of “demonic possessions” throughout history.</span></span></span><br />
<br />
<br />
The original direction on this cover was for it to be warm, clean, and
evocative—something that may allude to the medical aspect of the writing but
still look approachable and human. The publisher nixed the idea of a photo of
the author on the cover, so these were to be type driven comps.<br />

The initial feedback was that these comps were too clinical, so my art
director asked me to try a new angle. They wanted me to <b>not</b> use the
brain or fire...to make this look more like a memoir, focusing on the survival
story and the personal aspect of the book, as opposed to the brain science.<br />

Here, I created a more intimate version of the silhouette. The title is trapped in her head and the painted background alludes to fire. The scattered sunflower petals also show a "burst," such as flames, but are softened in this context.<br />

I also wanted to try something that would suggest the inner functioning of a
brain without being too literal. This image really struck me. I think it evokes
a network of neurons without showing anything clinical or technical. It’s
amazing how items from nature can call to mind completely unrelated phenomena.
I also liked how the hand is reaching up and starting to lift. The one lone
flower stretches through the top of the title in a hopeful way.<br />
<br />
In the end, none of these comps worked and the publisher chose another
designer’s more straightforward approach with an author photo on the cover. I'm
happy I had the opportunity to read this inspiring book and design comps for it,
despite not having one chosen.<br />

Last Spring, I worked on this title for Stephani Finks at Harvard Business Review Press. Stephani, as always, gave me the perfect direction...and from there I had a great visual metaphor to draw upon:<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #990000;"><i>The "Untangling" in the sub is really the crux of the book – Untangling Skill and Luck in Business, Sports, and Investing.</i></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib3RjHd1TdKS_5xG0ynFoxq7wQzsVdX_Ayhz4y3KXHk0CxBAb-GZkHq5ZPEv7o5N8p5yrLf8BmJ9xzJETBqm0ihmuYi96zYQkPEJGQ6NF54oRwwztB9hG8JToGNCo0MLDZpfz_eCbZVQY/s1600/mauboussin_comps-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
From the beginning a graphic, type driven design was my approach on all the comps. Here are two alternate designs and the final red one. It makes sense the author would gravitate to the comp that includes insets of each of the three topics discussed in the book (business, sports and investing), though it lacked any visual relationship to the word "untangling." I was still hoping for the green one which plays on this theme the best in my opinion, but the final design does make a good fit.<br />

A couple years ago I briefly worked on a title called <i>Designer Genes</i>. Here is a short summary from the tip sheet:<br />
<br />
<i>The possibility exists that there will arise an elite class of genetically engineered citizens, followed by an era where each generation selects the genetic makeup of the subsequent generation. This man-driven evolution will replace Darwinian natural selection.</i><br />
<br />
This is a compelling concept. The approach needed to be accessible and warm, but sill authoritative. Here are a couple of the options I sent along (forgive the quick photoshop work). In the end they went back to a previous designer's comp. Still, an interesting topic and I was pleased with these two directions.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbN_Io1D1u-_CPzQYU_yZGLHEl9JFa9kfl-OIPdFuS-3Hvd3pNb3mW4eBWjHyX0U9faOhVSkrlg84TBcAZ8GzwyC6Ae08ZtT2CRoGat7zhthH2W8CWLEGTrL9oqRrKMxYSF01hPV3rNHs/s1600/treucoloralt2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<i>Signs, Streets and Storefronts</i> is a new book project that recently wrapped up. From Amazon:<br />
<br />
<i style="color: #660000;">Signs, Streets, and Storefronts</i><span style="color: #660000;"> addresses more than 200 years of
signs and place-marking along America’s commercial corridors. From
small-town squares to Broadway, State Street, and Wilshire Boulevard,
Martin Treu follows design developments into the present and explores
issues of historic preservation.</span><br />
<br />
I began with the interior design first and adapted the cover about a month later. Here is an alternate comp from the first (and only) round that is closer to the interior design. The idea was that the blue would be a metallic:<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghqicXd7sDeaqMCY-cjhDG0tRCioGwPq7qs7OcBmudnOjLYWzDFvnPu-hGbr8UB_y2KxcSm51th6Chyphenhyphen-TJAKRRtm__rGiLZEunANd0euigCT2-cUCF_Aj4t_8mvCznY8RUQJ3vggrtaMg/s1600/treu_jkt_comps-2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghqicXd7sDeaqMCY-cjhDG0tRCioGwPq7qs7OcBmudnOjLYWzDFvnPu-hGbr8UB_y2KxcSm51th6Chyphenhyphen-TJAKRRtm__rGiLZEunANd0euigCT2-cUCF_Aj4t_8mvCznY8RUQJ3vggrtaMg/s400/treu_jkt_comps-2.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
However, the consensus was that this orange cover was more dynamic:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWml3R6kpfAI77KBTleahQr5TuW8uOR_4-YnLlstxgUCsdYMfl7rjWdJN0zTJvgm_3gpRxxO14mIJAE7n6mYyqk_02cw2u_BeWtTev_l6r7wJfonX9toA28vQendwFET6XWefUk2-N9aU/s1600/treubooksm.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWml3R6kpfAI77KBTleahQr5TuW8uOR_4-YnLlstxgUCsdYMfl7rjWdJN0zTJvgm_3gpRxxO14mIJAE7n6mYyqk_02cw2u_BeWtTev_l6r7wJfonX9toA28vQendwFET6XWefUk2-N9aU/s640/treubooksm.jpg" width="555" /> </a><br />
<br />
Below is a sampling of the interior spreads. The book is b&w
throughout with a color signature. The shapes and angles of the signs are appealing and it struck me that recreating them might be a nice
addition to the chapter openers. Once I redrew the lines and integrated
them into the spreads, I carried this style element throughout the book on the
TOC and frontmatter. Definitely a fun project (especially placing the Lustig graphics throughout).<br />

My self imposed direction was to display violence without being <span style="font-style: italic;">too</span> graphic.<br /><br />Early on in the story, the main character comes upon a dead fawn, and then makes the hide into a fawnskin to wear. For the first comp and the only one not showing a woman, I wanted to show the fawn and the juxtaposition of innocence and brutality.<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgttk2PjGHh-wMHqnzLQfN84aMgGBtPNb8qvUMcsisAGMeKcWJlvaHJQLHJLcrmF8z-NiPQUpr65dRzOvL6VNOewWVqFJuZ3IBWQDaSjXBB8AYkB-yE8_yELdGdOQbnUIgBSxX-qdKLGfY/s1600/color+of+night+comps-1.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgttk2PjGHh-wMHqnzLQfN84aMgGBtPNb8qvUMcsisAGMeKcWJlvaHJQLHJLcrmF8z-NiPQUpr65dRzOvL6VNOewWVqFJuZ3IBWQDaSjXBB8AYkB-yE8_yELdGdOQbnUIgBSxX-qdKLGfY/s320/color+of+night+comps-1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5665285930441194962" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Many of my other covers do show a 60s stylized version of women, appropriate to the era in which this novel takes place. The most intriguing part of the annual, hands down, was always the 50 books/50 covers section and most definitely was an inspiration to start my own book design career. I would see the same names over and over, and I developed a fair amount of hero worship for these book designers.<br /><br />Fast forward many years. Last month I was at AIGA’s New York office judging the 50 books / 50 covers show. This was not only meaningful to me as a designer, but also because the show itself had been <a href="http://www.save5050.com/">cancelled</a>, then <a href="http://www.aiga.org/50-books-50-covers-is-back/">reopened</a>. There has already been much said on the subject—<a href="http://observatory.designobserver.com/feature/hard-times-for-hard-copy/26528/">good and bad</a>—so I will forego that debate and highlight instead that there were a decent amount of entries this year. The number was slightly down from the prior year, but in comparison to the total amount entered into the 365 competion, it was a good showing and, in my humble opinion, definitely worth the time, money, and energy for AIGA to continue the legacy of this competition.<br /><br />AIGA’s Gabriela Mirensky was our coordinator for the judging and the overall process went very smoothly with <a href="http://www.goodisdead.com">Chip Kidd</a> as our chair (whose insistence on including 50 of each category I’m happy to report was fulfilled).<a href="http://nytimesbooks.blogspot.com/"> Joseph Sullivan</a> from the Book Design Review blog and designers <a href="http://www.arthuradesign.com/">Arthur Cherry</a> and <a href="http://www.heavymeta.com/">Barbara Glauber</a> rounded out the jury and it was a pleasure spending two days with such talented people discussing book design. As Peter Mendelsund <a href="http://jacketmechanical.blogspot.com/2010/05/voyna-i-mir-i-voyna-i-mir-i-voyna-i-mir.html">noted</a> last year, the criteria for which pieces were selected had more to do with the need for consensus among all 5 judges rather than the any lack of quality among those pieces which were not selected. It was a rare treat to see the work of so many designers I admire all in one room, receiving the recognition each book designer deserves, but only a handful can receive each year.<br /><br />Finally, I will say that in my mind, the 50/50 competition advances the work of all book designers and gives us a means of showcasing the talent in this field. Yes, we are constantly updating our blogs, twitter, facebook, etc. to get an immediate reaction to our work, but having a large selection at once across all subject matters and all design styles and <span style="font-style: italic;">documented </span>is a good thing.<br /><br />We are definitely up against many challenges in the coming years regarding the value of our profession. I’m happy there is a place where book designers are celebrated. I’m also hopeful that the annuals and now, the <a href="http://designarchives.aiga.org/#/home">Design Archive</a>, will provide other designers a place to find inspiration (though I’ll go ahead and note here that I miss the printed design annuals for which I don’t think there is a numerical way of evaluating how many times we open and close those pages as opposed to a website). Thanks to everyone who entered and hopefully the entries will increase next year.K. I myself have two in the last couple of years and for the same publisher no less. Here is one of them...<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Will Write for Food</span> focuses on the art of food writing. When I received the brief to work on the paperback edition, my first thought was to go a bit more conceptual and playful since the title has a lightheartedness to it. The hardcover was effective, but it showcased the requisite plate which I was hoping to avoid for the paperback.<br /><br />My first round of comps have more of an illustrative styling to them. Graphic & bold, with a little humor thrown in:<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQdXUCAjzWgfXSVupxAmtqZ1R6rwRcPo9OuQywAYwR6K1MV8VUBHYs_qDG2Rqf98xdc5mQUv_-mwYP0FNTvpJr0vnw0yiNqj8lxhlv0NNU-v5aNkSRAdO80BN6sE7caKTOhX5Xg945y6M/s1600/jacob+comps1.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQdXUCAjzWgfXSVupxAmtqZ1R6rwRcPo9OuQywAYwR6K1MV8VUBHYs_qDG2Rqf98xdc5mQUv_-mwYP0FNTvpJr0vnw0yiNqj8lxhlv0NNU-v5aNkSRAdO80BN6sE7caKTOhX5Xg945y6M/s320/jacob+comps1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5606350080038972386" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdQ4vY9IZ0zoMsbwvpdCuZdsmaoQKgcbBFAq_7ikh0Wk45m2pJCMLmjOx2mP5wwcfvVa9jhzyLnoSQKkrMqYPuQSlWo-q9vAkh4HWZuqg9fK12xbk1cjDxFEFiQD5m6_Wwr8dftycd1y0/s1600/jacob+comps2.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdQ4vY9IZ0zoMsbwvpdCuZdsmaoQKgcbBFAq_7ikh0Wk45m2pJCMLmjOx2mP5wwcfvVa9jhzyLnoSQKkrMqYPuQSlWo-q9vAkh4HWZuqg9fK12xbk1cjDxFEFiQD5m6_Wwr8dftycd1y0/s320/jacob+comps2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5606350080020963058" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIiuGfpspPXh8Zek5RsXadoYcEcHFaUIdcYoZwE4gGPraMGCFUKv7PhTDWtRRU6FueN1JQ5ZDucvt03SJz3tXgxcnH3HxocbBQkGVOOOY0OoWv4RPE1bWARaz_4gbugpTO5H-kRE1MVA8/s1600/jacob+comps4.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIiuGfpspPXh8Zek5RsXadoYcEcHFaUIdcYoZwE4gGPraMGCFUKv7PhTDWtRRU6FueN1JQ5ZDucvt03SJz3tXgxcnH3HxocbBQkGVOOOY0OoWv4RPE1bWARaz_4gbugpTO5H-kRE1MVA8/s320/jacob+comps4.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5606350083714070946" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDJkBfKwXt_EuHvTqoA6LRD-A45TKF557Y7eM6lHNVMJvS_DnGQqoHrynvxFyzv25e0b1_xwtrVPenyH_rVa5PH5IyiLhWtbzpE9CfZej3W283bUviyGWmH_B6oSDL0XIrGnL1vPunJm4/s1600/jacob+comps3.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDJkBfKwXt_EuHvTqoA6LRD-A45TKF557Y7eM6lHNVMJvS_DnGQqoHrynvxFyzv25e0b1_xwtrVPenyH_rVa5PH5IyiLhWtbzpE9CfZej3W283bUviyGWmH_B6oSDL0XIrGnL1vPunJm4/s320/jacob+comps3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5606350083457633234" border="0" /></a><br />At first the comps were fairly well received. The top comp was the chosen one to revise and pursue. Overall the vector illustration wasn't quite working for people in-house though and maybe it was too busy? However, I was told they liked that the cover looked like a guidebook, but still had an elegant feel to it.<br /><br />After revising the comp multiple times by incorporating actual photos of the fork and pencil, this cover comp was finally discarded.<br /><br />So, we began a new round of comps where the direction was more straightforward: not so much about the writing, but all about the food, and elegant food at that, appealing to a general audience of foodies.<br /><br />Taking this direction, here are two comps that came out of this round:<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZw1EK2Vf7LmwWoK3b-YjmdWJIX_oI3ERFhRU85Ge6WoBFosB9NL3ajTLgCsYdGdwmtHLdpvpRSpulB8zoeOKtJDpVCQrbT8pADf5uQexuGooHrcjwqCGI8CiFlipXRy4L7dkj0x7SR9M/s1600/jacob5.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZw1EK2Vf7LmwWoK3b-YjmdWJIX_oI3ERFhRU85Ge6WoBFosB9NL3ajTLgCsYdGdwmtHLdpvpRSpulB8zoeOKtJDpVCQrbT8pADf5uQexuGooHrcjwqCGI8CiFlipXRy4L7dkj0x7SR9M/s320/jacob5.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5606350089758767090" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzcP7xaToNvALufH380o8c1kt0EmXf2Css1UOBUOMyW6NJOOaDz7InQc2haYdTewT9MuEN3Z4lNfn4TOZGeprsf0nH3u5wihHZZ9YrRvJZTXlgOdHiJJXb35cXHyUHB48iVRYVlshthko/s1600/jacob6.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzcP7xaToNvALufH380o8c1kt0EmXf2Css1UOBUOMyW6NJOOaDz7InQc2haYdTewT9MuEN3Z4lNfn4TOZGeprsf0nH3u5wihHZZ9YrRvJZTXlgOdHiJJXb35cXHyUHB48iVRYVlshthko/s320/jacob6.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5606367149692598562" border="0" /></a><br />From this round, the final was chosen. It wasn't a good one, but somehow all my lo-fi records sounded perfect at that age. Some years later (ahem), getting to design with vinyl on a book cover is one of those jobs where you can't quite believe your luck.<br /><br />Here is a brief description from my art director, Rachel Moeller:<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">A collection of rock criticism of Ellen Willis, a feminist cultural critic famous in the 60s and 70s. While the cover can definitely evoke the era, we'd like it to appeal to a mainstream audience that loves rock and appreciates that vinyl culture is alive and well today.</span><br /><br />To update the look, I chose bright colors to even out the "vintage" subject matter. I was hooked with the first story and read the entire manuscript before sketching. The first concept that came to mind was a gas mask since many of the stories have an apocalyptic bent. The idea was to create the image out of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Las</span> Vegas icons. So I set out about the tedious task using poker chips, dice, playing cards and of course, the iconic <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Las</span> Vegas sign.<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZPVIR8W2MaEbqwmAMsmUz8s6FC-y7AL6oYGBi2sj8UpLnNp_OyeqgmVZpHrz2QR1RMSav2ewQbi_ACSPhD9FjmIL93wXlxV7QuVK-FVSve21LBVxA8BG3DP6uB3DopfCsAqJFWaKeORY/s1600/deadneoncvr.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 206px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZPVIR8W2MaEbqwmAMsmUz8s6FC-y7AL6oYGBi2sj8UpLnNp_OyeqgmVZpHrz2QR1RMSav2ewQbi_ACSPhD9FjmIL93wXlxV7QuVK-FVSve21LBVxA8BG3DP6uB3DopfCsAqJFWaKeORY/s320/deadneoncvr.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571072091286172482" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSbn6wEsFXdaCqv5a6Tf46XNc7irljZg697v-1YHaxG3pdWwIPhgCvv7gE3V2AaYcvHrV-BCpWlEePBJE84h8vCZJWQdUiX7OLBzSmGvWyNbqWTbgo8fSoYMXFFCJND0LXLOmYA_HUfiI/s1600/deadneoncloseup.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSbn6wEsFXdaCqv5a6Tf46XNc7irljZg697v-1YHaxG3pdWwIPhgCvv7gE3V2AaYcvHrV-BCpWlEePBJE84h8vCZJWQdUiX7OLBzSmGvWyNbqWTbgo8fSoYMXFFCJND0LXLOmYA_HUfiI/s320/deadneoncloseup.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571072075830805090" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Once I had this comp done I hit a wall. This is the case with Robin Black's beautiful <span style="font-style: italic;">If I Loved You, I Would Tell You This</span>. As with all short story collections, the difficulty lies in finding imagery that can represent the tone of all the stories.<br />
<br />
From the Random House website:<br />
<br />
"Brilliant, hopeful, and fearlessly honest,<b> </b><span style="font-style: italic;">If I Loved You, I Would Tell You</span><b> </b><span style="font-style: italic;">This</span> illuminates the truths of human relationships, truths we come to recognize in these characters and in ourselves."<br />

<br />
The title story is where I originally began. It centers on a woman who is dying of cancer addressing her neighbour, who wants to erect a fence that blocks her driveway. The fence became a visual icon for me in the first round of comps:<br />

The second set of imagery I used was paint strokes, inspired by the story, <span style="font-style: italic;">Immortalizing John Parker</span>. The main character, who is a painter, reflects on her own life while painting a portrait of an aging Alzheimer's patient.<br />

The painterly feel of the comps was what I was asked to concentrate on and from there a series of painted comps was submitted for review. First warm, then cooler colors...<br />

Towards the end, the focus shifted back to an earlier comp with the 9 paint strokes. From there, we adjusted the background color and the final jacket was complete. Seen below is the front cover, spine and back:<br />

<span style="font-style: italic;">A small aside: Initially I used 9 paint strokes because the manuscript I received over a year ago had 9 stories. It wasn't until I showed up for Robin's book reading at Bryn Mawr College that I realized the book had 10 stories. </span>K. This book came to me from Julianna Lee at Little Brown. A interesting project since I already owned the hardcover, bought in part because of how much I liked the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">hc</span> <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Connected-Surprising-Power-Social-Networks/dp/0316036145/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_1">jacket</a> (designed by Julianna). The direction was to take an entirely different approach than the jacket....maybe something closer to <a href="http://www.designrelated.com/portfolio/kglyder/page/5/entry/9944/small-pieces-loosely-joined">this</a> cover I did many years ago.<br /><br />Here is a quick summary from Amazon:<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Scientists <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Christakis</span> and Fowler present compelling evidence for our profound influence on one <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">another's</span> tastes, health, wealth, happiness, beliefs, even weight, as they explain how social networks form and how they operate. </span><br /><br />My first idea was to form the letters out of groups of people. I spent an inordinate amount of time placing these silhouettes. This was a favorite concept on my part, but was deemed too difficult to read because of the title not reading as one word.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg64tbrbE_ssnX5D7tuFWqqeg4GAbrl4szooCSRHm8mOCJAtk2RgnAU3h09h2zLGVagFue7kRMf-4sDuoQz_rRih4vWk3K-7EheRWMiMzomC9Y5l4GNRhoNJqkt_Xi9ERgpF_X3hMU1R0w/s1600/connected_1.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 211px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg64tbrbE_ssnX5D7tuFWqqeg4GAbrl4szooCSRHm8mOCJAtk2RgnAU3h09h2zLGVagFue7kRMf-4sDuoQz_rRih4vWk3K-7EheRWMiMzomC9Y5l4GNRhoNJqkt_Xi9ERgpF_X3hMU1R0w/s320/connected_1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5497107592009631394" border="0" /></a><br />On this comp, I graphically connected the letters and layered them over a crowd of people:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSQQvv59F0h0Xj7nXuYAmEHMtcQ7377iTznFsB1EwNvCT5gBb7BeuuUguRJy_l0ybSdobkKC2IXpSB23wtqvi30LK-2jfhG8XbKkDATbXWc-FUIh6ENMXJHfiavPlx33y40LLNgsUovTQ/s1600/connected_2.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 211px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSQQvv59F0h0Xj7nXuYAmEHMtcQ7377iTznFsB1EwNvCT5gBb7BeuuUguRJy_l0ybSdobkKC2IXpSB23wtqvi30LK-2jfhG8XbKkDATbXWc-FUIh6ENMXJHfiavPlx33y40LLNgsUovTQ/s320/connected_2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5497107600278193906" border="0" /></a><br />The final cover is a literal interpretation, but bold & iconic. I was immediately struck by the title. The book has just printed (final cover at the end). Here is a summary of the novel from Amazon:<br /><br /><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-style: italic;">In a remote, </span><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">piney</span><span style="font-style: italic;"> wood in Finland stands a convalescent hospital called </span><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Suvanto</span><span style="font-style: italic;">, a curving concrete example of austere Scandinavian design. It is the 1920s, and the patients, all women, seek relief from a variety of ailments real and imagined. On the lower floors are the stoic local Finnish women; on the upper floors are foreign women of privilege—the “up-patients.” They are tended to by the head nurse, Sunny Taylor, an American who has escaped an ill-starred life only to retreat behind a mask of crisp professionalism.</span><span style="font-style: italic;"><br /><br />Summer turns to fall, and fall to a long, dark winter. The patients begin to hear rumors about the changes being implemented at </span><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Suvanto</span><span style="font-style: italic;"> by an American obstetrician, Dr. Peter Weber, who is experimenting with a new surgical stitch. Their familiar routine threatened, the women are not happy (they were not happy before), and the story’s escalating menace builds to a terrifying conclusion. </span></span><br /><br />At the beginning of the project my art director at <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Graywolf</span> gave me several good bits of info to lead me along in my design process: The hospital building and it’s nod to the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">gothic</span>, austere beauty, seductive darkness, the body and its meat-like reality and the feel of a <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">greek</span> tragedy. All strong elements to work with.<br /><br />The main element that stood out to me was the body and the surgical stitch used in the story. These factor strongly into my design directions. I also was struck by the title...sounded like writing from a formal invitation. I make reference to this with the panel holding the type. The bright red line is meant to evoke stitching lines:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW7Bj4bvFz0WSG1JAk7-jmrirGg-tqnuDN24fovSh369uNsBs1tmOA9a9-RNAKHl6Nu54AzRctMt7tnPq5by9jepyph2OAD8ynit1X91MWkw7lXswz_Y045XHTZC5Xl5zZ0qf7WpKFF_U/s1600/SUVANTO+comps-1.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW7Bj4bvFz0WSG1JAk7-jmrirGg-tqnuDN24fovSh369uNsBs1tmOA9a9-RNAKHl6Nu54AzRctMt7tnPq5by9jepyph2OAD8ynit1X91MWkw7lXswz_Y045XHTZC5Xl5zZ0qf7WpKFF_U/s320/SUVANTO+comps-1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465932621663675730" border="0" /></a><br />Stitches & the human body (with it's meat-like quality):<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSfP7YhTxJMIiXB68HXaplaEg36hCg2E9ZnPl09rFmu7DnD9bYJKwlciTvPjoekqTu6_S0RYWXbpt3G5Py9QLAR6jEC-voYFNt95IytXM7gw_lYNm_DWQIDNOram_KFmgUfO_tkjxGVVo/s1600/SUVANTO+comps-2.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSfP7YhTxJMIiXB68HXaplaEg36hCg2E9ZnPl09rFmu7DnD9bYJKwlciTvPjoekqTu6_S0RYWXbpt3G5Py9QLAR6jEC-voYFNt95IytXM7gw_lYNm_DWQIDNOram_KFmgUfO_tkjxGVVo/s320/SUVANTO+comps-2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465932624377128082" border="0" /></a><br />The body sectioned using a woman from the 1920s era and the sewing stitch again:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihwyPCaf79U_VGGPruJ1oOtm9ALnNzPA_seKlxXjkQG6B1lsliX-drgTElgi0JBWOaPwSrXneTFEmatPhaRXBfniZacv-Z_Z63DkkDulZKC_EsrrZrvnvcW5AEqir1rDQ5hxkwjGwQPGU/s1600/SUVANTO+comps-3.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihwyPCaf79U_VGGPruJ1oOtm9ALnNzPA_seKlxXjkQG6B1lsliX-drgTElgi0JBWOaPwSrXneTFEmatPhaRXBfniZacv-Z_Z63DkkDulZKC_EsrrZrvnvcW5AEqir1rDQ5hxkwjGwQPGU/s320/SUVANTO+comps-3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465932630778504754" border="0" /></a><br />The nurse portrayed in an austere illustration style:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuGzdweUm_mIxu0mY39JFQBxlGl_8HYg0jZPZdWEXPX1d4ATAvOEB2pn1TNqv9X0HCJLJJw9IgVSj2QB0ATDJBnT7QuQmYTwqhcuMpJemLTZVJblxFYa8SRjLHcwFtL8WuhQGm7kXGWMk/s1600/SUVANTO+comps5.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuGzdweUm_mIxu0mY39JFQBxlGl_8HYg0jZPZdWEXPX1d4ATAvOEB2pn1TNqv9X0HCJLJJw9IgVSj2QB0ATDJBnT7QuQmYTwqhcuMpJemLTZVJblxFYa8SRjLHcwFtL8WuhQGm7kXGWMk/s320/SUVANTO+comps5.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465934283153962866" border="0" /></a><br />Revisions came back from this first round and I reworked the comps a bit. Their authors are innovative voices in publishing and on my end, it makes for interesting subject matter to work with. Such is the case with <span style="font-style: italic;">The Bluesiana Snake Festival</span>. Here is a short description via Amazon:<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">"Through a blend of voices — Big Jim Bullshit, Shushubaby, and Brooklyn Bob, to name a few — the musical voice of New Orleans is revealed in its varied dialects, grooves reminiscent of ragtime, jazz, and blues. The result is a look into who these folks are, their ways and beliefs, their senses of truth, and of existence itself. A novel about the joy and beauty of life in the depths, the momentum and narrative heart isn’t driven by a plot — it’s about the trance.</span>"<br /><br />Originally I was asked to consider a piece of artwork, but I felt like it was limiting in it's appeal. Thankfully the publisher and editor were supportive and allowed me free reign to try other directions. After reading the first line of the manuscript it was clear to me the writing was lyrical and rhythmic. Instead of opting to show a straightforward shot of New Orleans, I instead used imagery of a snake which has a mysterious and fluid quality to it.<br /><br />Comp 1 which has a flat, graphic look:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWhRQlRpPwDcL7pTMRHQ8sLE2rhze_f6D-tjObkDjWUWBpqc25jKpiEx8g01Wb5z_sPBqpmJsmGRWIQOkL7dCXDJi_6JCv3_FZrSVfEmncs6gfUmceclCudZjGQlitCa45NSldCNxrzUk/s1600-h/bluesiana+comps-2.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWhRQlRpPwDcL7pTMRHQ8sLE2rhze_f6D-tjObkDjWUWBpqc25jKpiEx8g01Wb5z_sPBqpmJsmGRWIQOkL7dCXDJi_6JCv3_FZrSVfEmncs6gfUmceclCudZjGQlitCa45NSldCNxrzUk/s320/bluesiana+comps-2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451474123130307474" border="0" /></a>Comp 2: uses wood distressing and a snake in place of the "S"<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizhs0HhMiZ2euEMEqzU1NZsMGg8gMsNZNAol_Lh9lvVEfcrrlBr7P_zv7V3UUCIt1tH5VpfO3QWJE7VWqrMxagRR9Mf3pCuxlEkBJltpvaEe5wGlFerKcDa0sYJYK5aYmbYKao2DuOqMc/s1600-h/bluesiana+comps-3.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizhs0HhMiZ2euEMEqzU1NZsMGg8gMsNZNAol_Lh9lvVEfcrrlBr7P_zv7V3UUCIt1tH5VpfO3QWJE7VWqrMxagRR9Mf3pCuxlEkBJltpvaEe5wGlFerKcDa0sYJYK5aYmbYKao2DuOqMc/s320/bluesiana+comps-3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451474126259727922" border="0" /></a>And the final approved design using the snake, moon & even a broom representing the street sweepers. Why? Well, doesn't matter. Some internal conflict has rendered your cover a no go.<br /><br />Case in point: <span>a novel,</span><span style="font-style: italic;"> The Blue Orchard</span>.<br /><br />Summary: <span style="font-style: italic;">On the eve of the Great Depression, Verna Krone, the child of Irish immigrants, must leave the eighth grade and begin working as a maid to help support her family. Her employer takes inappropriate liberties, and as Verna matures, it seems as if each man she meets is worse than the last. Through sheer force of will and a few chance encounters, she manages to teach herself to read and becomes a nurse. But Verna’s new life falls to pieces when she is arrested for assisting a black doctor with “illegal surgeries.” As the media firestorm rages, Verna reflects on her life while awaiting trial.<br /><br /></span>I was told to make this one "beautiful." Even heavy subject matter requires a pretty cover...<br /><br />Here are the three comps submitted<span style="font-style: italic;">.<br /><br /></span>The comp below uses a vintage fruit crate label from my collection. The peach is meant to overwhelm the cover (and the main character, Verna). The numbered lines in the back reference the ledger she keeps of all the patients in the doctor's practice:<span style="font-style: italic;"><br /></span><span style="font-style: italic;"><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim9GAexN8hN0s_dXbWWy4YhHAW1GwIP-la-D6TM4c0dVpsF16CMi2pNjewW7IE9R2RuFckII30c_YSamTark-4R67TopYzX3t6AUQ_fn0yX4IR19sBnNks7K5loGPKoIQorxM3ZqJbtNQ/s1600-h/the+blue+orchard1.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 210px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim9GAexN8hN0s_dXbWWy4YhHAW1GwIP-la-D6TM4c0dVpsF16CMi2pNjewW7IE9R2RuFckII30c_YSamTark-4R67TopYzX3t6AUQ_fn0yX4IR19sBnNks7K5loGPKoIQorxM3ZqJbtNQ/s320/the+blue+orchard1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431999982281494034" border="0" /></a><br />Again, I used (more of) the vintage art in a new composition, this time paired with an image of a maid. Verna originally worked as a maid before becoming a nurse.<br /><span style="font-style: italic;"><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8SNvZz3ks9PRcolt9P1Akv82i7b2xqOewvK_9UdwSpAumvGnbeVsB_fbqrw1KPEV08WnCo9DSG9je8sNnUif_xuVC53wpi6CF0Tpr83vhmk_0qkmKPaRzAw6QUDqC37XTWyhx0Q8YhEk/s1600-h/the+blue+orchard2.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 210px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8SNvZz3ks9PRcolt9P1Akv82i7b2xqOewvK_9UdwSpAumvGnbeVsB_fbqrw1KPEV08WnCo9DSG9je8sNnUif_xuVC53wpi6CF0Tpr83vhmk_0qkmKPaRzAw6QUDqC37XTWyhx0Q8YhEk/s320/the+blue+orchard2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432000481607712578" border="0" /></a><br />For the third comp, I mocked up the front & back. Using a vintage illustration of a woman from a stock house as reference, I redrew/recolored the figure to represent Verna. On the front cover I have her dressed as a maid, and on the back as a nurse, each time holding the peaches which are a symbolic of her family orchard.<br /><span style="font-style: italic;"><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg96vije8Kn7b8E82jVmuIbtKE0ZcUB5DgyyB_e-UHK3yXyr3rhjR6bx5AHqoE1U1m2tPrmJK1yAnVmkLdY-K_4EtonIvSXCddix2iqyzTVII8xixzGzIwzqCbFhhWVhLHk3TJK62wgNyo/s1600-h/the+blue+orchard3.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 224px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg96vije8Kn7b8E82jVmuIbtKE0ZcUB5DgyyB_e-UHK3yXyr3rhjR6bx5AHqoE1U1m2tPrmJK1yAnVmkLdY-K_4EtonIvSXCddix2iqyzTVII8xixzGzIwzqCbFhhWVhLHk3TJK62wgNyo/s320/the+blue+orchard3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431999993020017842" border="0" /></a><br />The top comp above was chosen. A few months later the cover was killed. Too bad, I liked this one...K. This is an incredible story written by Sonia's son. From <span style="font-style: italic;">Booklist</span>:<br /><br />Reich's Jewish mother lived in the town of Dubno, Poland, as a child. In 1941, when she was 11, she began a four-year journey of running and hiding from the Nazis, coming to the U.S. when she was 16. She worked in candy and clothing factories in Chicago and met the author's father, a survivor of a death march to Buchenwald, on a blind date. On February 15, 2001, when she was living in Skokie, Illinois, she packed some clothes in two shopping bags and fled, believing that someone was trying to kill her, "to put a bullet in my head." She was diagnosed as having late-onset post-traumatic stress disorder, was admitted to a psychiatric ward, and then to an assisted-living facility.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">From the author:</span><br />"In the midst of my mother's stunning soliloquy of rage and delusion, of anger and fear and accusation," Reich writes, "I finally, belatedly, incredibly realized that this was all about the war, and what awful things must have happened to my mother when she was a child, pursued because she was a Jew."<br /><br />This was obviously a very moving, disturbing story. The author provided a wealth of photographs of Sonia, though at first we weren't sure if we would use them.<br /><br />From the first comps (which used a different title at the time) I was taken with the idea of ghosts from the past coming back to haunt Sonia. For this comp, I used a chair with the ghostly image of Sonia as a child overlaying it.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCkxIx0qITPbppzKHzLscU1w4GNAXkTks2tVa9FZAgCNAaMlYMPyWbGvoyppOcsUgoha9hrTlAZdZyQ8PuA-tR8N9rliXShKy2BawX2lTaAeZh5MAsNrZrBcwe1X0ZjoQX_OHHbsGNsTs/s1600-h/sonia's2.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCkxIx0qITPbppzKHzLscU1w4GNAXkTks2tVa9FZAgCNAaMlYMPyWbGvoyppOcsUgoha9hrTlAZdZyQ8PuA-tR8N9rliXShKy2BawX2lTaAeZh5MAsNrZrBcwe1X0ZjoQX_OHHbsGNsTs/s320/sonia's2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5424039082987781394" border="0" /></a><br />I also created an all type version:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb4PCry0_n6vwf-lf9PV4N7VDneSTcme8uzOBJEslKuId3DLbwV9oZQ0hhFof1K63wnJeFgE9ULam5sVTAVkNlXeGkcK3nqK2V5ZjFOh_F6aQTeGT0cjpCgCptdaoMzuJ3Ns7DdaEoh_U/s1600-h/sonia's1.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb4PCry0_n6vwf-lf9PV4N7VDneSTcme8uzOBJEslKuId3DLbwV9oZQ0hhFof1K63wnJeFgE9ULam5sVTAVkNlXeGkcK3nqK2V5ZjFOh_F6aQTeGT0cjpCgCptdaoMzuJ3Ns7DdaEoh_U/s320/sonia's1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5424039076990902354" border="0" /></a><br />With a title change (so that it wouldn't be put in the Holocaust memoir section), we also changed directions. This time we went with a film reel, the idea of images replaying over and over in Sonia's mind:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEDqnjc9ro90kbpYXBehyphenhyphen5nS2bOq958GY_-6BnTeWIOFDYzVhrqp74uM0njiJvptczIapqRD2zyoZO9dz6P4dqJ4bfHKWM6OuVmkTnqmOVC8LTWm9C0zvNWk_xX9mk7mIJc_0CuyDXXG0/s1600-h/sonia3.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEDqnjc9ro90kbpYXBehyphenhyphen5nS2bOq958GY_-6BnTeWIOFDYzVhrqp74uM0njiJvptczIapqRD2zyoZO9dz6P4dqJ4bfHKWM6OuVmkTnqmOVC8LTWm9C0zvNWk_xX9mk7mIJc_0CuyDXXG0/s320/sonia3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5424039088398476034" border="0" /></a><br />From there, the direction was to go back to something more thoughtful, so I merged these photos to create a woman (not Sonia) in front of a window. Still using that ghostly effect:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT4QZnUYsxQr4ZtBAXV1In2lNK0jOF7E_Ddo0y3Eb5MTD_F-4A1QwEk6tLsnup7bf1H4helabkMicVbTTZHkdGG40pAqqSzKzk3Kv20uw4M3Go3qFl4Apb_Xz5mBR1efGCcMEdfwTahkg/s1600-h/sonia4.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT4QZnUYsxQr4ZtBAXV1In2lNK0jOF7E_Ddo0y3Eb5MTD_F-4A1QwEk6tLsnup7bf1H4helabkMicVbTTZHkdGG40pAqqSzKzk3Kv20uw4M3Go3qFl4Apb_Xz5mBR1efGCcMEdfwTahkg/s320/sonia4.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5424039090403424450" border="0" /></a><br /><br />In the end we did some photo layering again, but this time with Sonia as an adult over a desolate, beautiful landscape image:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-BV187Sii0NbHStwIjGhFxPm700JrX3QncO4ngRspatEfRCLL-SHPev2vcGOiEqhnqxOBrv353A6WxKAQMCUPpPSF0r5guY3v4rNA0elRKttPK29S4AbncwD4Wzp8gxfGNpnL5gOLdCI/s1600-h/sonia4b.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-BV187Sii0NbHStwIjGhFxPm700JrX3QncO4ngRspatEfRCLL-SHPev2vcGOiEqhnqxOBrv353A6WxKAQMCUPpPSF0r5guY3v4rNA0elRKttPK29S4AbncwD4Wzp8gxfGNpnL5gOLdCI/s320/sonia4b.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5424057923442740434" border="0" /></a><br />I had liked above how the type worked with the image, out of focus and moving, but I was asked to go back to a more straightforward treatment. Final is below:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi33SDJ2ptUcrO-2uJk9bCj_SJM8VGnFE1ro6rEesC2L0SbBFhKa-lcXMaMdgf7e4bKdpKtq_IuusXooZbzbMrpfrkO2Tql2J1fQffXXzZRDTjQh0rA1Grd0cjckoaCLWsG5b6bu5L1ojU/s1600-h/sonia5.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 218px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi33SDJ2ptUcrO-2uJk9bCj_SJM8VGnFE1ro6rEesC2L0SbBFhKa-lcXMaMdgf7e4bKdpKtq_IuusXooZbzbMrpfrkO2Tql2J1fQffXXzZRDTjQh0rA1Grd0cjckoaCLWsG5b6bu5L1ojU/s320/sonia5.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5424039953524146386" border="0" /></a>K.
